Other than the most obvious reasons, like they’re cute, fluffy, loving, etc., there are many benefits to owning a pet. If you’re a pet owner, you should relish the benefits they bring to you, in addition to the unconditional love. If you’re not a pet owner, consider what you’re missing out on.
Allergies
Studies suggest that cuddling with a pet as a child may actually lower a child’s likelihood of developing pet related allergies. Children that are exposed to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. Unfortunately, this may not help adults who already suffer from pet related allergies, but it’s good news for young families considering the addition of a furry friend.
Socialization
Owning a pet may open doors for you to meet people. If you have a dog, they’ll get you out of the house, even if it’s just to the neighborhood park or dog park. There are many places that you can take your dog, like a training class, where you could meet other dog owners.
Most restaurants with outdoor seating, let you sit outside with your leashed dog. There are some social sites for pet owners, allowing you to connect with other pet owners, and schedule play dates with other dogs.
Your Health
Your pet encourages you to stay healthy, as they need to get out of doors often, and who else to take them, but you. Studies have shown that pet owner’s exhibit decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which minimizes your risk for heart attacks.
Most dogs need to be walked a couple times a day. Whether you own a dog, or are looking into getting one, do your research on the dog’s breed and see whether or not it needs a lot of exercise or a regular amount per day. Get out with your dog, on walks, jogs, a bike ride, or try an agility training class. Any of those options are great for getting you and your dog moving and staying in shape.
Pets also help with your overall happiness. The benefit of all those snuggles and the unconditional love that your dog has for you, does influence your mood. Pets give their owners a sense of purpose, which can really help someone who is battling depression or anxiety. They also provide people with companionship. Every pet owner knows, with a dog or a cat in the house, you are never truly alone.
