The Benefits of Owning a Pet

The obvious reasons for owning a pet are of course the cuteness, the companionship, the fluffy little paws, funny pet tricks you can teach them and the unconditional love. But there are some other benefits that you might not realize, and they are great things to consider if you are thinking about getting a pet.


Studies suggest that cuddling with a pet as a child may lower a child’s likelihood of developing animal related allergies. Children that are exposed to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. Unfortunately, this may not help adults who already suffer from pet related allergies, but it’s good news for young families considering the addition of a furry friend.


Dog parks, training classes, a fun day at the lake…these are all places you could take your dog and meet other people doing the same. Having a pet is a great way to meet other pet owners if you enjoy taking your animal out and about. It’s also a chance for your pet to meet other animals, which helps them learn good social manners. Central Oregon has a lot of restaurants that offer outdoor seating and often you will find dogs on leash, enjoying the social aspect as much as their owners. There are also some social sites for pet owners, allowing you to connect with other pet owners, and schedule play dates with other dogs.


Your pet encourages you to stay healthy by getting outside and exercising. Studies have shown that pet owners exhibit decreased blood pressure, and healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which minimizes your risk for heart attacks.

Most dogs need to be walked a couple times a day. Whether you own a dog, or are looking into getting one, do your research on the dog’s breed and see if it needs a lot of exercise or a regular amount per day. Get out with your dog, on walks, jogs, a bike ride, or try an agility training class. Any of those options are a great way to get you and your dog moving and in shape.

Pets also help with overall happiness. The benefit of all those snuggles and the unconditional love that your dog has for you, does influence your mood. Pets give their owners a sense of purpose, which can really help someone who is battling depression or anxiety. They also provide people with companionship. You are never alone so long as your furry companion is by your side!
